Accessible Entrance Works, Ulster Hospital

Situated at the front of the Ulster Hospital, the Paediatric block was originally a path which provided access to both the ENT and Breast and Endocrine services.  The path did not meet current Building Control standards for accessibility and was providing difficult for staff and patients to use on a daily basis.

Whittaker and Watt Architects provided the solution of two new lobby extensions and a connecting path ensuring safe, secure and accessible access to both existing services.

The small lobby extensions were finished in matching cladding boards with large picture windows facing out towards the Newtownards Road set at differing levels for varying views.  The path was the connection and was created using vertical larch timber boarding with planted sections between to bring a natural appearance to the grounds.  Integrated lighting within the timber boards ensured that the path way was safe and secure at all times of the day.
