Hemsworth Court

NIHE and Belfast Trust have established a need for ‘supported housing’ for older people, particularly those with Dementia, in the Shankill area.  The proposed development is to be a departure from the traditional institutional approach to care in focusing on ‘enabling’ residents.  Located in the heart of the Lower Shankill community, residents will be encouraged to live a meaningful and active life within their local community and families will be encouraged to play an active role in supporting the residents.

The scheme is for a 2-storey structure comprising 35 no. self-contained apartments, shared facilities and staff accommodation, designed around an inner courtyard. The courtyard is a significant feature of the development in providing a secure outdoor area for residents with cognitive impairment.

Whilst the flats are self-contained, four small Sitting/Dining Rooms are strategically located to offer communal meeting places for groups of residents.  The Sitting Rooms and the Crafts Room are generally positioned adjacent to the central courtyard to encourage residents to make use of this facility for walks and for gardening.
